[SPOILERS for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.]
At least one Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 actor wants Yondu’s original team of Ravagers back for more cosmic action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Martinex in the film, is interested in bringing his character back to the big screen.
Covered in CGI, Rosenbaum was barely recognizable when he appeared as Martinex, a character whose skin is made up of silicon crystal. Martinex was seen briefly in scenes with Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar and was present during that character’s confrontation with Yondu over the trafficking of children. Though Stakar and Martinex had reputations as criminals, they were disappointed with their friend’s activities and banished him from the team.
After Yondu’s sacrifice redeemed him in the eyes of his former teammates, Stakar and Martinex returned in a post-credits scene which showed the former reuniting the members of Yondu’s old team of Ravagers to honor their dead friend. The group consisted of Stakar, Martinex, Aleta Ogord, Krugarr, Charlie-27, and Mainframe. The scene indicated that the group would be available for a return in a sequel or another MCU film set in space.
As such, it makes sense that Rosenbaum has since tweeted out that he hopes his character and Stallone’s return in another James Gunn film.
Gunn has already stated that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be the final film starring Star-Lord’s group. Any future Guardians films would have to shift focus to a new team of space heroes.
Could a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy put more emphasis on Stakar, Martinex, and the others? In the comic books, Martinex and Starhawk (Stakar’s comic book identity) were members of the original Guardians of the Galaxy, created in 1969. The team’s adventures were set in an alternate future in the 31st century. The comic book Guardians were more heroic than their space pirate counterparts. Often serving as the voice of reason, Martinex was the Guardians’ science officer while aboard their ship, the Captain America.
Martinex was actually the leader of the group for quite some time before passing the mantle to Vance Astro, the main human member of the team. It could be that a fourth Guardians film could center around Astro, who could replace Star-Lord as the only human on the team.
The return of Stakar and Martinex will all depend on the potential plot for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and the direction of the franchise. Gunn has stated that “it would be great“ if the characters could return in supporting roles.
