The 2017 summer movie season is nearly over, and looking back, it was a mixed bag. However, one of the undeniable success from this period was Wonder Woman, earning largely positive reception from critics and regular audiences alike, and making nearly $800 million worldwide so far. The movie’s such a hit that Wonder Woman 2 is already well into development. Aside from Gal Gadot obviously returning to play Diana of Themyscira, few details about the sequel have been disclosed yet, but Academy Award winner Geena Davis is officially throwing her hat into the proverbial ring for a role in it: In her words:
I met Patty Jenkins and I told her, ‘I’m sure you’re going to make a sequel and if you need anybody Amazonian, there’s always me. I’m available.’
With Wonder Woman 2 still in the early stages, it will be a while until official casting reports start to trickle in. But as Geena Davis revealed to Variety, she’s already taken initiative and informed director Patty Jenkins that she’s ready to go should the call go out for a new Amazon. Since Davis already has action experience through her work on The Long Kiss Goodnight and Cutthroat Island, no doubt she would be a worthy addition for Wonder Woman 2. Following in the footsteps of Connie Nielsen’s Hippolyta and Robin Wright’s Antiope, she could be one of the senior Amazons who can still cut down any enemies who invade Themyscira.
Although Patty Jenkins isn’t officially attached on to Wonder Woman 2 yet, all signs point to her returning. Jenkins is reportedly close to signing a “historic deal” that would see her becoming the highest-paid female director in Hollywood. Given how critically and commercially successful Wonder Woman has been, bringing Jenkins back for the sequel is a no-brainer, as she’s one of the main reasons Diana’s standalone adventure has been so well received. Once she’s back in that director’s chair, Jenkins might want to give Geena Davis a call to add some Oscar-level talent for the next go-around. Officially, no plot information about Wonder Woman 2 has been released yet. Unofficially, it’s been reported that the sequel will be set in the 1980s; seven decades after Diana first stepped foot in man’s world and three decades before she meets Batman and Superman. The eponymous heroine will supposedly be battling Soviet Union forces as the Cold War is winding down, and it’s even been rumored that Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor will somehow be back. If Wonder Woman 2‘s story doesn’t call for any Amazons besides Diana, then perhaps Geena Davis could be used in another capacity, like playing Veronica Cale, another Wonder Woman enemy.
Wonder Woman 2 will be released in theaters on December 13, 2019, but you can see Diana of Themyscira teaming up with her fellow superheroes in Justice Leaguestarting November 17. As for Geena Davis, she can be seen in Marjorie Prime, which is now playing in theaters.
